In October, Jojin Van Winkle, associate professor of art and director of the Photography and Film and New Media Program, chaired the panel “Redirecting Towards Creative Practice: Artist Residencies Around the Globe” at Wayfinding, the 80th Annual SECAC 2024 Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prof. Van Winkle also presented a paper for this panel, “From Comic Relief to Meditative Practices: Unexpected Benefits of Artist Residencies.” She shared her experiences from the last six years of participating in in-person artist residencies and virtual or e-residencies. She spoke about her recent 2024 summer artist residency at Aviário Studio in central Portugal. During this month-long residency, she experimented in the darkroom and created silver gelatin photographs.

Prof. Van Winkle is a multimedia artist, screenwriter, cinematographer, producer, and educator. Her video, photography, and film research centers around listening, resilience, and the human condition. She exhibits nationally and internationally, and has participated in artist residencies globally for two decades.

SECAC is a national non-profit organization devoted to education and research in the visual arts for artists, scholars, and arts professionals. Participation in the SECAC Conference was supported by travel funding from the Office of the Provost.
