Student Fellowships

Benjamin Simington ’15 spent one year in Varanasi, India, as a Fulbright research fellow. He also studied Hindi in India as a U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholar.

Nick Tackes ’13 traveled to Delhi, India as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. “There is no way I would have been able to achieve a fraction of what I have if it weren’t for the incredible help I’ve gotten from Carthage faculty, family, and friends,” he said. “Whether it is a conversation about why you feel you are particularly suited to this or that country for a Fulbright grant, or a pep talk before you write your next draft of a personal statement, the help you receive has the power to turn your application into a winning application.”

Erin Gemperline ’11 was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “My application became a foundation application for other things I’ve applied for in grad school,” she said. “It got me thinking like a reviewer so I’ve felt more confident and been more successful with other applications and with writing in general.”

Deanna Love ’11 spent one year in Argentina as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant

Anesce Dremen ’17 received a U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship in 2015. “In addition to preparing for future research, my goal while studying in China is to write in my own voice, creatively and academically, in Chinese.”

Andrea Winbigler ’13 is teaching English in Spain, after participating in several impressive programs to help her get closer to her goal of teaching Spanish, including applying for a Fulbright Fellowship. Of the fellowship application process, she says, “Do it. Some students may think that it’s a long process and not worth their time, but it is. There is nothing to lose and if you get it, it will be a great honor.”
